How to Use Google Chrome in Split Screen View on Android

With the launch of android 7.0 Nougat, we have got a new feature known as split screen view. In split screen view, we can simultaneously run two apps on the same screen. This is indeed the best feature of android 7.0 Nougat. The biggest advantage of this feature is that we can work on two apps simultaneously. Split screen view is by default supported by most android apps. But Google chrome for android doesn't go into split screen view directly.

If you have used chrome on android 7.0 then you might have seen that the long tapping the recent apps button don't send the chrome tabs in split screen view. But for other apps this method works. It is possible to run two chrome browser tabs in split screen view. The benefit is that you can work on two websites at the same time and no need to switch tabs. Split screen view also prevents page reloading when you switch between tabs. This saves your data and time.

How to Use Google Chrome Tabs in Split Screen View on Android 7.0 Nougat.

• Open chrome browser and open two tabs.
• Long tap the recent apps button unless it open the split view.
• Now tap the 'Options' button in chrome browser. It looks like three vertical dots on the top right corner.
• From the options tap 'Move to other window'.
  

• On selecting this option the chrome browser will open two tabs in split screen mode.
• If you previously just opened one window then the upper split screen view of Google chrome browser will become empty.
• To open the new tab in the upper view tap the plus '+' button.
  
  


• Now you can browse two websites at the same time.
• Note that, by default the chrome tabs will split vertically but you can rotate the screen to let the tabs split horizontally.

Chrome for Android Now Lets You Save Webpages for Offline Viewing and Have a File Manager Too

Chrome v55.0.2883.91 for android now supports saving webpages offline. Previously for viewing pages offline we were actually printing them as PDF files. But with this offline feature you can now download entire webpages and view them later in chrome browser even if you don't have internet connectivity. Another good thing is that chrome for android now supports a built-in file manager that can be accessed by going to 'Menu>Downloads'. You can only view files that are downloaded by the chrome browser. These file types include pages, video, audio, images, documents and other.

How to Save Webpages for Offline Viewing in Chrome for Android

• Open the browser on your android phone and load any webpage.
• After the webpage finishes loading tap the menu button on top right and tap the 'Download' button.

       

• To access that offline page go to 'menu>Downloads'. Here you will find all the downloaded pages, images and videos.
• To access the file manager options tap the menu button on top left just before 'Download' or swipe the downloads screen from extreme left to the right of the screen.

The chrome hidden file manager will show files separately listed as different file types like images, audio, video etc.

'Touch To Search' Missing In Chrome For Android: Quick Tip To Get It Back

All of you may be familiar with the printing function of Google Chrome browser, which lets you save any webpage as PDF file. I have written a tutorial where you can save any webpage as PDF in chrome browser, see here. I also written about converting a word document into pdf (docx to pdf) by using chrome browser, see here. Both these tutorials are for the desktop/MAC version of Google Chrome. Now in this tutorial I am going to tell you how you can save any webpage, image or text that is opened in chrome browser as a PDF file on your android phone.


This PDF printing feature is build in the android version of Chrome browser, but it is not supported on all android phones, it is currently supported in android 4.4 KitKat and above. This is an extremely useful feature because anytime we may feel the need to save any webpage in PDF format, because it can not be easily edited there by assuring unexpected changes in file as we can do in a word or text file. A PDF serves as a hard copy print which can’t be edited without special tools. You can safely share these files via mail or view on your android or desktop PC.

This printing feature will only work on phones running android KitKat and above. Other users can use Google Cloud Print for the same task.

How To Save Webpages As PDF In Google Chrome On Android

• Previously there was a direct 'Print' option in chrome browser but it vanished now in newer updates.
• Make sure the webpage has loaded completely. To save a webpage as PDF on Google Chrome on android first tap the menu button on top right and select 'Share'.

     

• Now a vast sharing popup will open. You have to tap 'Print'. Then the android print dialog will open automatically.

• Here you can select ‘Paper size’ which include options like ‘Letter’, ‘Index Card’, Ledger, Tabloid etc.

     

• Tap ‘Orientation’ to select between ‘Portrait’ or ‘Landscape’. Sometimes it is better to choose ‘Landscape’ because the text contents fits well in this print layout.
• Tap ‘Color’ and either select ‘Black & White’ or leave as it is. Choosing ‘Black & White’ will remove colours from the PDF files.
• Tap ‘Pages’ to select which pages to print.
• To save the PDF file to Google Drive tap the 'Save as PDF' on the top left and select 'Save to Google Drive'. Otherwise keep the option set to 'Save as PDF' if you want to save it on the phone's internal storage.
• Finally tap the green button having ‘PDF’ written on it.
• Enter the name of your file. Tap the menu button on top left corner and select the storage location. By default it is set to internal storage. Directly save the file on internal or SDcard for quick access.

  

• Go to the location where you saved the file by using a file manager app. Tap the file to open. A popup will open. Select any PDF file handler like adobe acrobat or drive PDF viewer.

• Download and install ES File Explorer.
• Open it. On the main screen you will see 'Music' and 'Movies' options.
• I am teaching the procedure for videos which is same for music files.
• Tap the 'Movies' tab. Here you can see all the videos.
• Long tap any video then tap 'More' then select 'Properties'.
• Now tap 'Copy fullpath'. Then tap 'Cancel'.

• Now open Google Chrome android app and long tap the address bar and tap 'Paste'.
• The address of that file will be automatically pasted in to the address bar, now tap 'Go' button on the phone's keyboard.
• A player will open. Tap the play button to start playing video. You are also playing offline videos in chrome for android with this trick.

• Tap the full screen icon next to volume button to watch videos in full screen.
• Make sure that screen rotation is enabled so that you can watch the movies in landscape mode in full screen.

Note : To play a music file offline, repeat the same process above.

• Now again enter the same URL in browser and hit Go. This time you won't see any warning in UC player for data usage and the video will start playing.

View PDF Files In Chrome Browser

• Download and install chrome browser from this link.
• If you do not have adobe reader then its good, if you have it installed on your PC then you can uninstall it if you are using it just for viewing pdf files.
• Now right click on any pdf file and choose ‘Open with’. A list of compatible programs will open.
• Choose ‘Google Chrome’. If chrome is not listed then click ‘Browse’ and locate the ‘chrome.exe’ file which can be found in the installation folder. Select it and click ‘OK’.
• Then again click ‘OK’.

• Now double click the pdf file to open it.
• To zoom in press ctrl key and mouse wheel up. To zoom out press ctrl key and mouse wheel down.

Now you can easily view pdf files in chrome browser without using adobe reader and without any special plugin for chrome. Now this tutorial has a benefit, because you no longer need adobe reader now which is saving some amount of system RAM. Viewing PDF files in chrome is faster than viewing them in adobe reader. But there is only one minor disadvantage regarding some pdf files in which Google chrome is unable to display all the contents of the file. This is a very minor problem, the missing content may be a graphic icon in case of a digitally signed document. In this case you will need adobe reader to verify the digital signatures.
