Guide To Connect Keyboard/Mouse/External HDD And Pen Drives To Any Android Tablet

This tutorial will teach you to connect a keyboard, mouse and a usb flash drive/zip drive/zip drive or a thumb drive to your android tablet. It doesn't matter which android tablet you have, this tutorial will work on any android tablet, be it Samsung android tablets, Sony android tablets or the Google nexus 7. I have tested it on galaxy tab 3, galaxy note 3, galaxy note 10.1, galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition, galaxy S3 I717 and Sony xperial ZL. Android tablets use big batteries that are capable enough to power a USB keyboard, mouse and a usb pen drive or flash drive.By connecting a keyboard you can do the office documents work. You can create text files, word files, excel and powerpoint files by using an office suite for android like the kingsoft office.

Using a keyboard will help you do the typing work very fast as you do it on a computer or a laptop. So there is no need to use the tablet's on-screen keyboard, because typing with it is very slow. You can also play emulator games on android that support gamepad with keyboard used as a gamepad. Also browsing the internet with keyboard will make typing websites' names and dropping comments very fast. The keyboard, mouse and the usb flash drive require only 0.2 Ampere of current, so make sure your android tablet is charged above 60%. If your tablet has the power saving mode then use it to save more power when keyboard or other usb devices are connected.

Requirements

  • Android tablet like galaxy tab 2, galaxy note 800, galaxy note 3, galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition, sony xperia ZR, Xperia ZL or any other android tablet of any brand.
  • An USB OTG cable for your android tablet.
  • A keyboard, mouse and a pen drive drive or an external hard drive of WD or Seagate.
Connect A Keyboard/Mouse And Flash/ Pen Drives/External HDD To Any Android Tablet

  • Buy a separate USB OTG cable specially designed for your android tablet.A USB OTG cable has two connecting ends. One end fits in the tablet and other end has a female USB connector in which you can connect keyboard/mouse or flash drives. See the image below.

galaxy tab 2 p3100 otg cable

  • The OTG cable shown in the above pic is for Samsung android tablets and supports galaxy tab 2 p3100, galaxy tab 2 p3110,galaxy note 8.0, galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition and the galaxy note 3.
  • First connect the one end of the OTG cable to your android tablet then connect either usb pen drive, keyboard or a mouse.
  • On connecting any of the above mentioned usb devices you will get a notification on your android tablet.
  • When keyboard is connected then you can use your android tablet as a computer to edit and create Microsoft office documents much faster as compared to using the tablet's touch keyboard.
  • Connect a USB flash drive/pen drive/zip drive to directly view the files stored in it and copy data from the flash drive or copy files in it. You can directly watch movies on your android tablet by connecting a usb drive by using OTG cable.
  • Before removing the flash drive from the OTG cable goto 'Settings>Storage>Unmount USB OTG'. Then remove the flash drive after unmounting.
  • Connecting a mouse to your android tablet will do the touch work. To open files you don't need to touch the screen, just use mouse's left click to open files on your tablet.

Advantages

  • Connecting a keyboard to the android tablet will ease browsing on it as you can type web addresses much faster then using the tablet's software keyboard.
  • Directly connecting a flash drive to your android tablet will save much time and you can directly copy data from it to your tablet.
  • Also you can listen to music and watch movies directly from the flash drive.
Now you have successfully learnt to connect the usb keyboard, mouse and a pen drive to your android tablet.

    1. The OTG cable may not be compatible. Galaxy TAB 3 fully supports OTG. There is a problem with the OTG adapter.

    1. The keyboard may be faulty.Mouse and keyboard require same power. Don't use unbranded keyboards. Use dell, HP, Microsoft or logitech USB keyboards. I have tested all of them and they are 100% working.

    2. Abishek's answer is not correct. The powered usb port on your tab 2 does not provide sufficient power to operate your keyboard. There is no fault with the keyboard itself. The usb port only provides around 2mA of power...enough for very low power devices only.

    3. Galaxy tab 2 p3110/p3100 fully supports USB OTG> I have tested it myself by connecting keyboard, mouse and pen drive. I have the proof. See tip no. 22 in the below link.

    1. When you connect what error do you get. You can only connect pen drives. If after connecting the the pen drive no notification appears on tab then OTG is not supported.

    2. One more thing go to 'Developer options' and enable 'USB debugging'. If it still doesn't work then OTG is not supported on tab 3 lite. Uncheck USB debugging afterwards.

  5. To those who cannot get the usb port to recognise a device connected to their Galaxy tab 3 or tab 3 lite... It wont. The port is for charging only and unpowered so peripherals will not run and data can not be transferred. The tab 3 and tab 3 lite are entry level models. To have a fully functional usb or otg port you need to go for a more highly specc'd model. You're welcome :-)

  6. Please note....in the instructional article ( lol) above its states this works on any android tablet. This is not true. Otg is only supported on higher end tablets...cheap or entry level tablets will likely not support otg or usb peripherals. The hardware is different on the high end stuff....the otg port is a powered port...on the cheaper devices it is not and the port is used only to charge the device. This information is available on Samsung's official site in the support section.

    1. I agree with you that it will not work on every tablet. But OTG works on most tablet even on entry level phones and tablets like galaxy tab 2 p3100 and p3110. OTG has an API which is built in android OS if your tablet or phone has this USB OTG API then OTG is supported by your device. OTG still works on a cheap level phone like Xperia U. Entry level android devices has a support for USB OTG. Moto G also supports it which is an entry level phone by price, Xperia M supports which is also an entry level phone.

    1. Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 doesn't support OTG. It is only supported in Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 LTE and Tab 4 10. There is no way to solve it if OTG is not supported in hardware.

    1. No it does't support OTG. If you haven't bought it then buy apple ipad mini wifi. The all galaxy tab 3 series is a waste of money. You can also buy ASUS fonepad 7 which is much better than galaxy tab 3.

    1. Use a wireless combo mouse and keyboard that operate with only a single nano receiver. Connect this nano receiver to your tab and I hope both devices will work.

  11. IS it possible to samsung galaxy tab2 P3100 supports 500GB external HDD via this cable

    ReplyDelete

    1. It depends on the power rating of HDD. Almost all external HDDs require 5 Volts to functions. Tabs doesn't have that much of power, they can give maximum of 4 Volts. I would recommend you to use USB OTG charging cable.
