How to Configure Android Dual SIM Manager for Calls, Data, and SMS (Step-by-Step Guide)

Mastering your smartphone's connectivity starts with a properly configured Dual SIM Manager. Whether you're balancing a work line and a personal number or using a travel SIM for international data, Android provides robust tools to streamline your communication.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to manage network preferences, set default actions for calls and SMS, and optimize your interface for maximum clarity.

To ensure the best user experience, we recommend labeling your cards with the standard "1" and "2" icons. Unlike generic icons, these numbers provide instant visual confirmation of which line is active within your call logs and notification shade at a glance.

Let’s dive into the essential steps for seamless Dual SIM integration.

Step-by-step guide on how to configure Android Dual SIM Manager settings

How to Configure Android Dual SIM Manager: Step-by-Step Guide

I have tested this tutorial on a Samsung phone running Android 16 with One UI 8.0. If you are using another Android phone from a different manufacturer then you can find and configure similar settings on your phone.

However, some steps may be different, but the overall functionality is the same on all Android phones.

Quick Preference Guide

Before you begin the setup, use this table to decide which configuration fits your current needs for Android Dual SIM Manager.

Pro Tip: If you are using a limited travel plan, make sure to set your connection as metered. This prevents Android from performing heavy updates or backups while you're on a budget data plan.

Feature Best For Travel Best For Work/Life Balance
Calls Ask Always Default to Work SIM
Messages Local SIM SIM 1 (Primary)
Mobile Data Travel eSIM Largest Data Plan

You can follow these steps below to configure Android Dual SIM Manager.

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  2. Tap open the SIM Manager and here you will see your SIM cards and their preferences for calls, text messages and mobile internet (mobile data).
  3. Under SIM cards you will see a blue toggle button next to each of your SIMs. Using this toggle button you can enable or disable any SIM slot. Once you disable the toggle button, the respective SIM will immediately stop working. Once you enable the toggle button, the SIM will start working again.

  1. Under 'Preferred SIMs' you can set preferences for your SIM cards for making calls, sending text messages and using mobile internet.
  2. Tap the 'Calls' option and you will see three options: 'Ask always', 'SIM1,' and 'SIM2.' You can make the choice as per your convenience. If you select 'Ask always' then your phone will ask for the preferred SIM when you make a voice call. You can then either select 'SIM1' or 'SIM2.'
  3. However, if you select either 'SIM1' or 'SIM2' then your phone will by default will use that selected SIM for making calls without giving you an option to select.
  4. Similarly, tap messages and select the desired SIM. In case of messages your phone may not give you the 'Ask always' option. So, only select the desired SIM (SIM1 or SIM2) for text messages.
  5. Finally, tap 'Mobile data' and select the desired SIM for making mobile internet usage on your phone.

Important Note: Selecting the correct SIM or travel eSIM for mobile data is the most critical step in this guide. International data roaming charges can skyrocket without warning, leading to massive "bill shock" if your provider lacks a strict data cap. For an extra layer of protection, you can enable Data Saver on Android to restrict background apps from eating your data. Always ensure your affordable eSIM or local carrier is selected before browsing.

Important: Phone Signal Strength and Your Battery

You might notice that your battery drops faster if one of your SIMs has very poor reception (like when you see only one bar or "Emergency calls only"). This happens because the phone works extra hard to find a signal.

While you can use the toggle button in Step 3 above to turn off that SIM and save battery, I don’t recommend doing this. It is very easy to forget that you turned the SIM off, which means you could miss important calls or urgent messages even after you’ve moved back into an area with a good signal.

A better tip: If one SIM is constantly struggling, try checking your "Network Mode" instead. Sometimes forcing that specific SIM to stay on 4G/LTE or 3G instead of hunting for a non-existent 5G signal can help stability without the risk of missing your calls.

How to Change SIM Cards Icon In Android Dual SIM Manager

The SIM card icon is the only visual nod that helps you identify your SIM1 and SIM2. So, just setting up a fancy icon for your SIMs won't be an ideal choice. The worst case scenario is to setup the same icon for both your SIMs that would never let you identify your SIMs in the call logs, please avoid this.

I always recommend setting the SIM1 icon with a SIM card icon with '1' in it and SIM2 icon with a SIM card icon with '2' in it. This clearly let you identify your SIM cards in call logs. Calls in your call logs will display the SIM card icons. This way you can easily distinguish SIM1 and SIM2 calls.

Here's how you can change the SIM card icons in Android Dual SIM Manager.

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  2. Under 'SIM Cards' tap the SIM1 and tap 'Edit name and icon.'

  1. Enter the SIM name and select the icon that shows a '1' inside a SIM card. Tap 'Done' to finish.
  2. Go back to the Android Dual SIM Manager and repeat the steps for SIM2 and select the icon shows a '2' inside a SIM card. Tap 'Done' to finish.

You have successfully updated your SIM card identifiers!

The Bottom Line

A well-tuned Dual SIM setup does more than just connect you to two networks; it gives you peace of mind. By spending a few minutes labeling your icons and locking in your data preferences, you eliminate the guesswork and avoid those "wrong number" heart-sink moments or surprise roaming bills.
