Windows 10 KB4074588 Fails To Install (0x80073715): Is There Any Fix Yet?

KB4074588 is the second cumulative update for Windows 10 that has been released by Microsoft recently. It is also known as February 2018 Security Update for Windows 10 devices. This cumulative update brings many fixes related to internet explorer and Microsoft Edge etc. But just like the January cumulative update KB4058258 the KB4074588 keeps on failing while installing. Since the start of 2018 Microsoft has only released two major security updates for Windows 10 and unfortunately, none of them install. These updates report error codes including 0x80073715, 0x80070bc2, and 0x80070422.

Windows 10 KB4074588 Fails To Install

Windows 10 downloads the cumulative update KB4074588 but when it comes to installation it fails completely. The KB4074588 installs 25% percent only then it fails completely. But other Windows 10 updates are installing normally without giving any error code. So why these cumulative security updates aren't working? Nobody has a correct answer. If KB4074588 fails to install on your computer then you may be advised to apply the following fixes.

  • Use system file checker to check for file integrity problems.
  • Use the DISM tool to replace the corrupted Windows 10 system files.
  • Reset the Windows 10 update agent by deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder and renaming the catroot2 folder.
  • Resetting the Windows 10 update agent is a time-consuming process as you will have to run several commands. Read this official tutorial.
  • Manually download the package the from Microsoft Update Catalog.
  • Disable .net framework 2.0
  • Uninstalling your antivirus software because according to Microsoft it may have a problem with a key in the registry. But most modern antiviruses have already set the required key in the registry.
  • Signing out of your Microsoft account and creating a local account to install the update.
But unfortunately, none of the above-mentioned fixes work. You will just waste your time by giving those non-working fixes a try.

On running the Windows Update troubleshooter the system reports a 'Potential Windows Update Database Error'. Now, in this case, you will be advised to reset the Windows update agent and re-register the BITS files. But nothing will fix this installation error.

And it is not the case with a single Windows 10 user but the same problem is being experienced by many users around the globe. So, is there any fix for this problem? Currently no and we can only wait for a Microsoft patch that will fix the issues related to cumulative updates because other Windows 10 updates are installing.

Without security updates, Windows 10 will soon become vulnerable. Because many users haven't managed to install the January Security Update KB4058258 and Microsoft released the February 2018 cumulative update without fixing the prior security patch. And I am sure that Microsoft will not consider it as a serious problem unless it is experienced by a large number of Windows 10 users.

There is no fix for Windows 10 cumulative updates that fail to install. But if you are concerned about your computer's security then you shouldn't be skipping any of the monthly cumulative security updates. The only way of installing these updates is to do a clean install of Windows 10. I have tried this method with an update KB4056892 that just broke my computer a month ago. However, there is no guarantee that a clean install would definitely fix this problem.

➜ Update #1

A clean install will fix this Windows update problem. But during a new Windows 10 installation you should also delete the old 'System Reserved' partition. Read this updated article.

  1. My problem was created with my original Windows7 to Windows10 upgrade. Because of an issue there, I had to install the upgrade manually and was unable to do so with my Microsoft account login. As a result, I had to create a local user to do the upgrade. As a result, my Windows 10 is licensed to that user rather than to my Microsoft account. All I had to do to get KB4074588 was to log in as the user specified in my Microsoft license. Use winver to check. As so as I logged in under my local user the install completed.

    1. Thanks for the info. But unfortunately it is not working even after switching accounts from local to Microsoft account and vice versa.

    1. We can just only wait for the official patches from Microsoft for fixing these errors.

    2. Microsoft have incorrectly re-used the index for the update (duplicate). Causing Error Code 2147956501 "The identities of the manifests are identical but their contents are different." Causing error 0x80073715.

Use Media Creation Tool as a workaround (choose update):

    4. That doesn't work for my language (german) or my edition (Enterprise).

    5. It will not work. These cumulative updates are full of bugs. Windows 10 is getting vulnerable day by day. There is no update from Microsoft in this regard. Lots of people are experiencing same problem when none of the cumulative update installs on Windows 10.

  3. Not sure about the Enterprise version, but German should work. If it works correctly it should update in the process. Sometimes you need to run windows update afterwards. If you choose ”keep settings, files and apps”. Nothing should be deleted, everything should be as before, but Windows get refreshed, it takes some time though. If that doesn’t work, try Microsoft Support.
But first, make sure that any settings or third party apps (eg Spybot Anti-Beacon) affecting Telemetry are reset to default. These are known to negatively affect Windows Update

Exactly the same problem! Really annoying sice you cannot stop update unless usual tricks (pay data plan). Please HELP ME. Microsoft sleeps despite I'm an insider and I've done plenty of feedback on this issue and also a support live with a previous update with similar trouble.

    1. I just re-installed Windows 10 and all updates have now been installed. Prior to re-installation the Windows 10 troubleshooter reported Windows Update Database Corruption error which was beyond repair and even DISM and SFC couldn't fix it. So I just re-installed Windows 10. Make sure you have backups of your data and during re-installation delete the old 'System Reserved' partition from previous installation. Windows 10 will automatically create a 'System Reserved' partition during installation.

I deleted the C:\ drive partition and System Reserved partition and made a new C:\ partition during re-installation. D:\, E:\, and F:\ partitions weren't touched because they have my precious data.

After fresh installation Windows 10 installed all updates. If you are re-installing then during the Windows 10 setup delete the C:\ and System Reserved partition and make a new C:\ partition from the unallocated space. I think old System Reserved partition may have some relation with non-installing Windows updates.

  5. My solution: Uninstall KB4056892. Wait a day until WindowsUpdate searches new updates.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't test it. I re-installed Windows 10 with a new System Reserved partition and everything is working fine.
