How to Fix Screen Burn-In Problem on Moto G4 Plus

Moto G4 Plus is on the list to receive android 7.0 Nougat. The update will arrive soon. After finishing the soak test in Brazil, Motorola is conducting the same in India. Users in India are expecting the latest software update for Moto G4 Plus, but right now the android 7.0 for Moto G4 Plus is under soak testing. Moto G4 Plus had received the July security patch update which came with build number MPJ24.139-63. This update has notable bugs and we already mentioned some in this article.

The most notable bug of this July security patch update is the low notification sound. The notification sound is inaudible in a crowded place. But if you are watching a video or listening to music on your Moto G4 Plus then the notification sound is loud enough and can be heard easily.

Now some Moto G4 Plus users are reporting that after updating their phones to this July security patch update they are seeing screen burn-in problems.

What is Screen Burn-In Problem in Moto G4 Plus

Whenever you watch a video or the screen is constantly active for a long time say 20 minutes or more then you will see some discoloration in various parts of the screen. This discoloration is visible when you access quick settings panel by swiping down the screen. You can easily see ghost image of icons that actually doesn't exist on the phone.

screen burn issue moto g4 plus

These icons are mostly visible on top, left and right side of the screen. The problem gets worse when the phone starts to heat. The more your Moto G4 Plus heat the more discoloration and screen burn-in will happen on the screen.

Is Screen Burn-in Problem Related to Hardware or Software of Moto G4 Plus

We are not sure whether this screen burning problem is arising due to faulty screen or the phone's software. But we haven't noticed this issue on the previous software builds that Moto G4 Plus was running. We only came across this problem when we updated the Moto G4 Plus to MPJ24.139-63 firmware. So possibly the screen burn-in issue may be due to an OTA update that is the July Security Patch update. So, I think its a software problem.
The Moto G4 Plus gets September 2017 security patch update NPJS25.93-14-10 which partially fixes the screen burn issue. After installing this update the phone's screen is not fading heavily. Screen burn issue is still there but its effect is reduced satisfactorily by this OTA and most of the time you won't even notice it.

How to Fix Screen Burn-in Problem in Moto G4 Plus [100% Working]

If you are experiencing screen burning problem on Moto G4 Plus then we suggest you to wait for official launch of android 7.0 Nougat. This latest update will fix all software problems in Moto G4 Plus. We also suggest you not to install apps like 'Screen Burn-in tool' as this app will damage your phone's screen pixels. To fix the screen burn-in follow the steps below.

  • Download the color filter app from this link.
  • In phone settings make sure that 'Adaptive brightness' is 'ON'.
  • Install the color filter app on your phone.
  • Open color filter app and set the opacity to '20'. You can increase this value, but twenty is working fine. This value can be set to as low as '5' and it would also work fine. At value '5' the bluish color on screen will not be seen. However, the bluish tint is also not noticeable at value '20' either.
  • Now tap 'Color'. A list of colors will open. Scroll down to the last color and select the 'blue-gray' color just before the yellow color. See image below.
  • Now tap 'OK' to select the blue-gray color filter. Now enable 'Lockscreen'. If you enable lockscreen filter then the color filter will be applied to whole screen including the status bar.
  • If you do not enable the 'Lockscreen' filter then the status bar icons will cause screen burn. So enabling the 'Lockscreen' option is must to avoid Moto G4 Plus screen burn-in completely.

  • This fix is a 100% working solution for the Moto G4 Plus screen burning problem. We have tested this fix and the screen burning is nowhere to be seen.

Note: The above fix just prevents the Moto G4 Plus screen burn-in issue. Even many users have reported that after a screen replacement the problem comes back. So, the screen burn problem in Moto G4 Plus is from software bugs.

➜ Update: Even after updating to android 7.0 Nougat the burn-in problem didn't go. Whenever we use the phone to browse or watch videos on YouTube app then after few seconds we can see status bar icons visible on notifications panel. The screen retention can also be seen on both sides of the screen. It would be better to visit the Motorola service center and have your phone checked. But if you want to fix this problem by yourself then this tutorial is for you. Screen replacement isn't a solution.

➜ Update 2: If you have updated your Moto G4 Plus to android 7.0 then 2G network option is not accessible anymore. You can't select 2G network, but we have found a trick to enable 2G network on Moto G4 Plus after android 7.0 update.

➜ Update 3 : Moto G4 Plus gets the December Security Patch update which fixes low notification sound problem and brings stability improvements. The newer build is NPJ25.93-14. This is the first maintenance update after the android 7.0 nougat update.

➜ Update 4 : The Moto G4 Plus gets September 2017 security patch update NPJS25.93-14-10 which partially fixes the screen burn issue. After installing this update the phone's screen is not fading heavily. Screen burn issue is still there but its effect is reduced satisfactorily by this OTA and most of the time you won't even notice it.

    1. We are still not sure whether this is hardware or software problem. The screen burn can only be seen when we use Google chrome for browsing or use some apps that have white backgrounds or screen. If you watch movies on full screen then this problem will not occur. This problem started after the July Security Patch update. You can visit the service center for a possible solution and do tell us here if you find the reason behind this. Motorola is still not aware of this problem.

  2. I think they are aware of the problem but they are ignoring it,and the user who are getting their screen replaced are saying that they are still facing thus issue.I think that this problem has some connection with Moto 360 watch which was launched in 2012 which was having the same issue please can you help me.!

    1. The only solution to this problem is screen replacement. If the problem still exists after screen replacement then the service center hasn't replaced the screen. The white Moto G4 Plus is affected more. It is still not clear whether this problem is software or hardware related. When you watch movies on full screen then screen burn doesn't occur.

It only occurs when something remain persistent on the screen for a long time. Like browsing internet in chrome browser. This problem still exists even after updating to android 7.0 Nougat. I think Motorola has used very cheap quality screen in G4 Plus.

    2. Is the same problem exists in the G4 & G4 play??

    3. And what will happen if they use same quality material again the problem might be back after sometime na😥😫

    1. Yes I agree with you. The previous 3 generations were built by Motorola the 4th one is owned by Lenovo and this is the first Moto G with so many problems. Lenovo or Motorola has no answer to this screen burning issue. It is still not confirmed whether it is a hardware or software problem.

    2. So what's the permanent solution i read a guy post in Lenovo community from Germany that he got the screen replaced but after 3 months he was facing the same issue

    3. First of all it is still not clear whether this problem is hardware or software based. Since a lot of users are experiencing the same problem at the same time. So this makes me think either Lenovo has used low quality screen in Moto G4 Plus or there are some bugs that are not fixed yet.

If even after replacing the screen the problem comes back then this is an indication that Moto G4 plus's screen is of low quality. And the white variant is affected the most.

If you use your phone in sunlight with adaptive brightness ON or at full brightness without adaptive brightness then screen burn will not occur. You can test this. So this problem has something to do with the light sensor.

    1. You can read the article it is updated now. We have tested the color filter app and after using this app the screen burn is not coming back. But this is not a permanent fix. The screen may need replacement. You can visit the service center and share your experience here after getting the phone serviced.

  6. No but i have saw many user who got their screen replacement are again facing this issue,I have screenshot of it but there is no option to upload it and one thing which was common was that they got lgd display panel again which is having this problem and the service centre guys are saying that they cannot provide assurity about BOE panel it's on company who provide panels their work is to change the display..😅 and BOE panel is sometimes having Ghost touch issue..😫😫

    1. Its strange, that even after getting the screen replaced the problem doesn't go. So this screen burning problem may be related to motherboard or software. But we can't be sure whether the service center had replaced the display or not. Since there is no proof. They could have returned the phone after 2-3 days to the user without replacing the display. Motorola is not saying anything about this but my article works perfectly. You can use color filter app.

  7. Okk you are right, but why there is no official statement from Motorola regarding this problem?? Is it ignoring us

    1. Yesterday we had a chat with Motorola India on twitter. We asked about this problem from one of their representatives. But the representative told us to factory reset the phone and set the brightness to auto. Finally she said that anyone who is facing this problem should visit service center for a screen replacement.

But the representative was unable to confirm whether this problem is software or hardware related. Well, Moto G4 plus may get android 7.1.1 update in the end of Feb, 2017. We hope this update may fix this problem. If not then you should take it to service center for screen replacement.

  8. Hope that update might solve the problem because Ghost touch issue which was there in BOE panel is reduced after December security update and are you sure that the update will be released by fen 2017 because i am having warranty period till may and just one question to Moto is that if they know lgd panel is having screen burn then why they are providing it again??

    1. I am not sure about android 7.1.1 update. You can visit the service center and have your phone checked.

If even after replacing the display the problem doesn't go then two possibilities arise.

      1. They haven't changed the display.
      2. The problem is mostly software related.

So, go to the service center and show them that your phone's screen is having screen burn issues.

      Delete
  9. I will visit the service centre and surely share about the status of the problem one thing is sure it is occurring only in lgd display panel used in Moto G4 plus. Moto needs to think about it

    1. its lgd display... i thin u dont have knowledge about that... moto g4 manufacturs phone with BOE and LGD display.. as lgd panel has burn in issue and Boe panel have ghost touch issue

      Delete
    2. LGD and BOE are not screen technologies. Moto G4 Plus uses a IPS LCD touchscreen. Don't get fooled by service center guys. BOE is a chinese company that manufactures displays. LGD and BOE are panel IDs of their manufacturers. Just run aida64 app and check 'Display'. BOE and LGD are not screen technologies they are just panel IDs. Motorola doesn't manufacture display. In aida64 you will see screen technology as 'IPS LCD' not as BOE or LGD.

  10. Lgd is different from LCD it is panel id

    1. How can you be so sure that the screen went through a replacement procedure. They could have kept your phone for days and might have returned it to you without replacing the screen. If you are sure about it then the G4 Plus motherboard could have a serious fault.

  12. I am facing similar issue, display issues o Moto g 4 Plus, that i purchased from Amazon In 21 days back, till now phone is running on Android 6, I am updating to Android 7.

I have used Moto G 1 and Moto G 2 , but Moto G 4 plus, is surely having cheap Quality and Build and lot of Bugs, I have posted issue on Twitter and they are not providing satisfactory solution, I will visit their Delhi Service centre tommorow, But reviews of Service Centre Guys are not Good, It is awful experience with this Moto - Lenovo device.

Please check my twitter post and share the same so that Moto Support looks into this issue that so many people are facing

    1. G4 Plus phones having panel id as 'LGD' are affected the most. The 'BOE' panels have ghost touch issue. Motorola or Lenovo still has not found the root cause of this problem. After two months of screen replacement the problem comes back as reported by many users. After warranty period is over Motorola or Lenovo won't even think about your phone. Better sell it off.

      2. According to Motorola customer support the android 7.1.1 Nougat update for Moto g4 plus has been rolled out in India based on IMEI series. So keep checking your phone for updates.
      3. No the problem is not increasing day by day. During normal browsing, video watching at full screen, playing games the screen burn can't even be seen. It only occurs when the screen is on for a long time especially while browsing.

    1. No there won't be any problems. Motorola doesn't have a solution for this screen burn problem. This screen burn seems to be a software problem.

      Delete
  20. I may be wrong, but it seems that this screen burning issue is software related. With the nougat update the Moto G4 received the swipe to shrink action useful for people with very small hands. When doing this while the notification bar is ghosting, the issue only appears in the shrunk down image of the screen. No ghosting can be seen in the black borders surrounding the shrunk screen, therefore I believe it to be a software related issue.

    Replies
    1. Screen burning is mostly happening on the screen borders. Swipe to shrink doesn't have screen burn issue except the navigation buttons which touches the screen border, while other three shrunk borders don't show any sign of screen burning. It all started with a software update.

  21. My screen burning issue is not solved by Motorola service centre after all I have gone 2 times
    Please give me solution

    1. There is no official solution for this. Motorola doesn't know what's wrong. But I think its a software bug and related to screen refresh rate. The screen isn't refreshing within the time it should be, thereby leaving screen burn patches. I would suggest wait for the unplanned Oreo update for Moto G4 Plus. We can do nothing about this.
