Downgrade Samsung Galaxy S Advance I9070 To Android 2.3 Gingerbread From Android 4.1.2 Jellybean

Samsung galaxy s advance has received the official android 4.1.2 jellybean upgrade globally. The device never received an android 4.0 ice cream sandwich update and Samsung directly rolled out the jellybean update for it.The galaxy s advance can be upgraded to jellybean via kies or you can check this manual upgrading tutorial. Now most users of galaxy s advance have upgraded their device to latest android firmware, but most of them are not finding it suitable to be used as they are complaining about the performance issues in new galaxy s advance firmware. Some of the problems are listed below.

1.The galaxy s advance hangs a lot and shuts down randomly.
2.Most users are not able to play games like temple run smoothly.
3.The device just lost its fluidity.

So the users that are not happy with their galaxy s advance running android 4.1.2 can revert back their phone's performance by downgrading the firmware from jellybean to gingerbread.Downgrading is recommended if your phone is running slow and lags while gaming.

In this tutorial you will learn to downgrade your galaxy s advance to android 2.3 gingerbread if you have upgraded it to jellybean.

Tools Needed

  • Odin V3 Download Link
  • Samsung USB drivers for galaxy s advance Link.
  • Gingerbread ROM for galaxy s advance GT-I9070 Link.
NOTE : If you have the 8 GB model of this phone then there is no need to download this .pit file.

Warning: The below tutorial is for 8 GB model of SGSA. For 16 GB model of SGSA a tutorial will be given at the end of this post.

Prerequisites
Before you start upgrading your galaxy s advance you should read the instructions stated below very carefully, otherwise if something goes wrong with your phone,I can’t be held liable for that.So read the instructions carefully and do not skip any step.

  • Backup entire data stored on your phone’s storage like SMS,contacts, apps, bookmarks etc.Otherwise data lost once will not be recovered.
  • Its good to remove the sdcard from the phone to prevent data loss.
  • Use SMSBackupAndRestore to backup sms messages on your phone’s sd card.
  • Use androzip or android assistant to backup android apps apk on sd card.
  • Enable USB debugging on your galaxy s advance by going to “Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging”.
  • If you are using Google authenticator app on your phone then before flashing the device disable 2-step verification on all of your Google accounts if authenticator app is the only way to get 2-step verification codes for accounts associated with that authenticator app.
Warning : I will not be held responsible if your phone turns into a brick.Perform the flashing at your own risk.

Downgrade Galaxy S Advance I9070 To Android 2.3 Gingerbread

  • Download and install Samsung KIES from above link.Neglect if already installed.
  • Download the gingerbread ROM from above link and extract it on your desktop.
  • If you have the 16 GB model of galaxy s advance then download the .pit file from above links otherwise no need. The PIT file for 8 GB model is included in the ROM zip file.
  • Now shut down your galaxy s advance and reboot it in download mode by pressing home, volume down and power key at the same time.It will show you the warning to install custom rom, press volume up button to enter into odin mode.
  • Now launch odin 3.0.7 on your windows pc and connect your galaxy s advance to your pc. Let odin recognize your phone. When your phone is recognized by odin the field under <ID:COM> in odin will turn blue and you will see a message "<ID:0/011> Added!!".This means that your phone is recognized and is ready to be flashed.
  • Now check the box in front of PDA.Click the "PDA" button and browse for the file having the name "CODE_GT-I9070_I9070DXLD1_CL1068093_REV00_user_SEC_KEY_LD1_8G.tar.md5"
  • Now put a check mark in front of CSC.Click the CSC button and browse for the following file "CSC_GT-I9070-MULTI-CSC-OLBLD1_SEC_KEY_8G.tar.md5"
  • Now browse for the .pit file having name "GT-I9070_EUR_XX_16G_20111228_KL8.Pit".This PIT file is for the 8 GB model of galaxy s advance, for 16 GB model download the PIT file from above link and again repeat this step in odin for selecting the pit file for 16 GB model.
  • Make sure that only "Auto Reboot", and "F.Reset Time" options should be checked. Do not check "Re-Partition" otherwise your phones storage will be reduced to 3.91GB.
  • Now your galaxy s advance is ready to be downgraded with android 2.3 gingerbread.Below is the screen shot of odin before flashing.

  • Now click the "Start" button to invoke the downgrading process.
  • This downgrading process may take long to finish. On completion odin will return you a message 'PASS' and your device will be rebooted. Disconnect your device.
  • If the process fails in between then repeat the steps again.

  5. Hello sir, I need help please. I made this downgrades thousands of times but, I stupidly deleted ALL files before launching ODIN to make it like always ODIN says PASS, phone reboots but I am still waiting for the first screen showing SAMSUNG GALAXY S ADVANCE GT... to disappear. IT DOESNT. I can install jellybean again, it works but I cant go back to gingerbread anymore. Is this a semi-brick? What can I do?

  6. Sir, I need help, please. I made this procedures many times, but I stupidly deleted EVERYTHING in file explorer when I was at JellyBean, then made wipes (factory reset, cache, and dalvik), made steps with Odin, passed, rebooted the phone, but STUCKED at SGS ADVANCE GT screen. I managed to install jellybean, no problems, but cant get Gingerbread working anymore. I tried reseting, pulling out the battery, wipes, formating, but no luck. I know I might have deleted important system files, but can I make it work well again?

    1. while updating the device your galaxy s advance do not disconnect it until odin say pass. The phone will restart once during update process and after this odin will return pass. So do not disconnect the phone until you see pass in odin.

Secondly if you updated your s advance to jellybean via samsung kies then your phone's baseband may not be compatible with gingerbread as it is previously updated to jellybean.

And finally repeat this downgrade process once more and this time do not factory reset or wipe cache etc. After odin says pass disconnect your s advance and let it start own its own. It will take longer time to show home screen. Do not do hurry, as phones and tablets having large storage take more time to start after upgrade or downgrade.

      Hope this helps.

    2. Thank for your fast response, but I managed to find out that I was using the ROM first in PDA section, not DXD1 file, so I just forgot that one. Anyways, I hope this mistake could help someone if has this problem I had.

      Delete
    3. I found the mistake! I forgot to put the DXD1 file in PDA first, and then all the process but using the ROM in PDA section. I directly used the rom and not the first file mentioned, so that made the phone unable to run anything (except from entering download mode). A big mistake, for sure. Thanks anyways, I'll be here again if another problem occurs, great page and fast responses.

    1. Either use samsung kies to update it to 4.1 jellybean, because the gingerbread rom file for indian version is not available on samsung updates. Updating to jellybean will fix the storage issue..

    3. Install samsung KIES for latest samsung USB drivers. If your model is 16 GB then don't forget the .pit file in the tutorial. It would be great if you install the rom of your country. Which country do you live in. I will provide you a link of country specific rom.

    4. Yes, I used the latest Kies version. And also I did select the PIT file. I live in India. Please send me the links. Should I unplug the device from USB then?

      http://terafile.co/222154239129/INU-I9070DDULP8-20130412134604.zip

I can't say whether it is for 16 GB. I recommend to use samsung KIes

    6. So should I now repeat the steps with this new download link?

      Delete
    7. Yes. If the zip file contains .pit file then also use it for 16GB model and if the zip doesn't contain it then just flash the rom via odin. This time you would not get any errors.

    1. Your phone is absolutely fine, just clear the dalvik cache and factory reset it. Follow the step below, but it will erase everything on your phone.

      1. Reboot galaxy s advance in recovery mode by pressing home, power button and volume up key together. The device will automatically boot in recovery mode.
2.You can move up and down by pressing volume up and down buttons. Now select “wipe data/factory reset”.
      3. The device will be wiped and factory reset.
      4. Then go back and select “wipe cache partition”. After wiping cache partition go back and select “reboot system now”.

Now your s advance will work fine.

    2. The system does not boot into recovery mode itself. Every time I try to boot into recovery mode, it gets stuck in the first screen. Then I have to remove the battery and re-install it and then try to go to recovery mode but in vain. Please note that I did not have any custom recovery installed. I had no other way than to flash jelly bean again. Please suggest how to proceed? Is flashing GB through Odin 3.07 is ok.

      Delete
    3. First shut off the phone then press home+volume up+power button at same time to reboot in recovery mode. If nothing works use samsung kies to update to android 4.1 jellybean.
